Abstract
One of the narrations found in Islamic sources is Hadith Ghadir. This hadith deals with the event that took place in a desert called Ghadir. In this event, the Prophet (S) appointed and introduced his successor to people. Allamah Hilli has proved Imam Ali's successorship to the Prophet (S) with reliance on Quranic verses and prophetic traditions. Nevertheless, Ibn Taymiyyah has described the hadith as 'poor' and he has, therefore, denied its authenticity. He is of the view that since the tradition has not been reported in Bukhari's and Muslim's Sahih, it is therefore weak and inauthentic.  This claim comes at a time when some prominent Sunni scholars such as Hakim Neishabouri and Nasir Albani have authenticated the said hadith. In terms of the chain of transmission, the hadith is considered to be, at the highest level of authenticity and its purport in regards to Imam Ali's succession to the Prophet (S) is also very explicit and indubitable. Moreover, the etymologists have expressly stated that the term "moula" signifies priority. Also the rational and circumstantial evidences including the Prophet's order to the pilgrims to come together at a dry place as well as his saying (Of whomsoever I am master this Ali is his master) during the last days of his lifetime quite well prove Imam Ali's successorship to the Prophet (S), not his love because Muslims' love did not require any recommendation and it was the duty of all Muslim to love the Prophet and those whom he loved.  This study, benefiting from the sources of the two branches of faith and also definite evidences in the verses and traditions, comes to the very conclusion as also endorsed by Allamah Hilli.
